Restarting TRT after stopping treatment

Men stop TRT for all kinds of reasons: moved states, insurance changed, lost access to a prescriber, or just paused it. Restarting isn't as simple as picking up the same dose again, especially after a gap of months, because natural production may have shifted and old labs are no longer relevant.

A restart visit should include fresh bloodwork before any prescription is written, not a resumption of the old dose from memory. This is also the point where switching injection type (cypionate vs enanthate), frequency, or adding ancillary support like HCG is often revisited.

  • New baseline labs (total/free testosterone, estradiol, CBC, PSA if applicable)
  • Review of symptoms since stopping, including whether they returned
  • Fresh dosing plan rather than automatically resuming the prior prescription

Bring any old labs or prescription records if available, it speeds up the new clinic's assessment even if they still order fresh bloodwork.

What it costs

Expect to pay for a new-patient style workup even though you've done TRT before, since most clinics won't restart a prescription without current labs. Costs are similar to starting fresh: initial panel plus the first visit, then ongoing monitoring and medication costs.

FAQ

Can I just restart at my old dose?
Most clinics won't do that without new labs. Testosterone levels and how your body responds can change after time off, so a fresh baseline is standard before restarting.
How long after stopping TRT do symptoms come back?
This varies by person, but many men notice low-T symptoms returning within weeks to a couple months after stopping, which is often what prompts them to look into restarting.
Do I need to redo all the original testing?
Usually yes, at minimum current testosterone and estradiol levels, plus standard safety labs like CBC and PSA depending on age and history. Bringing old records can help but won't replace fresh labs.
