What is testosterone cypionate?

Testosterone cypionate is a synthetic testosterone ester with a long half-life, typically injected intramuscularly every 7-10 days as part of testosterone replacement therapy.

Testosterone cypionate consists of testosterone bonded to a cypionate ester, which slows its release into the bloodstream and extends the interval between doses. Most patients receive injections every 7 to 10 days, though some protocols extend to every 2 weeks depending on individual response and dosing strategy. This longer-acting profile distinguishes it from faster-acting esters like testosterone propionate, which requires more frequent dosing (typically every 2 to 3 days), and from testosterone enanthate, a similar long-acting ester with only marginal differences in half-life.

The cypionate ester is one of the most widely available testosterone formulations in clinical practice and remains a standard choice in TRT protocols. Its pharmacokinetics allow for more stable hormone levels with less frequent administration compared to shorter-acting preparations, which can improve patient compliance. The ester itself is inert and plays no role in hormonal activity; only the base testosterone molecule produces therapeutic effects on muscle mass, bone density, mood, and sexual function.
